Montana has the highest KIA rate per capita in the country for Iraq and Afghanistan. Grateful Nation Montana and the University of Montana have created a joint Memorial project honoring the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers by highlighting the role we play in the lives of their surviving children through mentoring and educational support. At the center of this moving memorial stands a fallen soldier and his young child. They are surrounded by a teacher and grandparents with all statues set atop a granite foundation encircled by visitor benches. Recessed granite markers are engraved with the name, branch, rank, dates lived and home town of our fallen Montana soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. The Memorial is located on the main campus of the University in historic Memorial Row
